Jan Philip Schinhan papers, 1897-1970, 1999 [manuscript].

Musical compositions, biographical material, correspondence, lyric materials, music workbooks, and other items documenting Schinhan's life. Materials include more than 100 songs written or arranged by Schinhan; words and melodies of folk songs collected by Schinhan and used by him in editing volumes of "The Frank C. Brown Collection of N.C. Folklore" (1957, 1962); and material relating to composer Joseph Carl Uibellein (Carl Stein), his maternal grandfather. Of the songs written by Schinhan, some have English lyrics and some have German lyrics. Included in the collection is "Songs of Jan Philip Schinhan," performed in 1999 by Grace Johnson, soprano, and Andrew Mock, piano, recorded by Stan Gilliam.

Jan Philip Schinhan, composer, conductor, musician and musicologist, was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1887. He was head of the organ department at the San Fransisco Conservatory in the 1920s and early 1930s, and a member of the faculty of the Music Dept., University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, 1935-1958.
